Thanks to its expansive and plentiful bamboo groves, Satsuma is known as take no furusato, the hometown of bamboo. It is renowned for its bamboo crafts, which have been made in the local area for centuries. For most artisans, techniques were passed down from the generations before them, making Satsuma home to among the most skilled bamboo craftspeople in Kagoshima Prefecture.

With such expertise on hand, what better place to try making a traditional bamboo craft? There are no blades involved so it is easy and safe to do, even for children. By simply following the movements of the instructor you can produce a unique souvenir of your time in Hokusatsu.

A wide range of bamboo crafts made by local artisans can also be purchased in the shop.
