What is Kagoshima Community Cycle "Kagorin"?

Kagorin is a cycle hire scheme with docking ports installed in 21 locations around Kagoshima City. Bicycles can be borrowed any time from anywhere, and can be returned to any docking port. It is a new means of transport. 

Friendly to the environment, cycling makes exploring the city of Kagoshima more fun.

Sakurajima Ferry Terminal "Sakurajima Port"

Sakurajima Ferry runs between Kagoshima Port and Sakurajima Port.

Passengers from Kaogshima Port pay the fare by cash (or certain IC cards) when they get off at Sakurajima Port.

JR-issued IC cards (e.g. Suica) and other currencies (e.g. US$) are not acceptable.

We recommend you to purchase the "Welcome Cute", which is the public transportation pass that includes trips on ferries, buses, and trams operated by Kagoshima City.

You can buy the "Welcome Cute" pass at the service counter on the 2nd floor of Sakurajima Port (7:00~9:00) in advance your boarding and show it to the crew.

Sakurajima Ferry Terminal "Kagoshima Port" (Kagoshima Honko Port)

Kagoshima Port for Sakurajima Ferry is about 15 to 20 minutes walk away from Tenmonkan area.

From Kagoshima Chuo Station, take the city tram to Suizokukan-guchi (Aquarium) tram stop.

Both passenger and vehicles will pay the fare at Sakurajima Port for the regular ferry line.

At Kagoshima Port, board the ferry and pay the fare when you arrive at Sakurajima Port.

Kirishima Jingu Station

Kirishima Jingu Station is on the JR Kyushu Nippo Main Line and provides good access to Kirishima Shrine.

The appearance of this station is very attractive and lets us feel as if we are already at the shrine.

You can take buses to Kirishima Shrine at the bus stop just in front of the station from around 7 in the morning to around 6 in the evening.

Bus service runs about once every hour.

These buses also stop at Maruo station, which provides access to Kagoshima Airport.

As there are few public transport services in Kirishima, do enjoy your waiting time with the foot bath (natural hot spring).

YORIMICHI CRUISE

There is a cruise called "YORIMICHI CRUISE", which will keep you fully entertained for 50 minutes with the attractive and changing views of Mt.Sakurajima and Kinko Bay.

The cruise runs once a day, departing from Kagoshima Port at 11:05AM and arriving at Sakurajima Port.

The cruising course differs from the ordinary one as it goes down Kinko Bay in a circuit. You may even get to see dolphins.

Sakurajima Summer Night Cruise

The Summer Night Cruise around Kinko Bay is an annual tradition. 

From 7 to 9 pm you can enjoy a floating beer garden and 50 fireworks bursting over the surface of the water.

Miyanoura Village, Yakushima

Located on the northeastern coast of Yakushima Island, Miyanoura is the largest village settlement on the island.

Miyanoura Port, marine gateway to Yakushima Island, is served by regular ferries and high speed boats from Kagoshima and Tanegashima Island, as well as cruise liners.

Sendai Ferry Terminal

The Sendai Ferry Terminal is the boarding point for the high speed boat "Koshikishima" bound for Koshikishima Island.

This ferry terminal was opened in conjunction with the start of operation of the high speed boat "Koshikishima".

Bearing a similar design to the interior of the high speed boat, this ferry terminal, designed by famous industrial designer Mr. Mitooka Eiji, has a wood-panelled interior, giving it a stylish and relaxed atmosphere.

Besides the ticketing counter, there is a café and souvenir shop, and the parking space can accommodate about 200 vehicles.

Sakurajima Island View Bus

The Sakurajima Island View bus, which covers the west area of Sakurajima, can be boarded at the Sakurajima port.

The one hour course has stop-overs at the Sakurajima Visitor Center (a volcano museum), the Yunohira Observatory (closest spot to the crater, which is at an elevation of 373m), and so on.
Recommended for visitors with limited time but would like to visit all the must-see locations on Sakurajima.

JR Sendai Station

The JR Sendai Station is located in the northwest of Kagoshima Prefecture, about 12 minutes by the Shinkansen bullet train and 1 hour by local trains from the JR Kagoshima Chuo Station.

High Speed Boat (Yakushima Island / Tanegashima Island)

Two high speed boats, Toppy and ROCKET, operate between Kagoshima and Yakushima Island and Tanegashima Island (no difference between the two types of boats in terms of conditions).

The shortest travel time between Kagoshima and Miyanoura Port (on Yakushima Island) is about 1 hour 45 minutes, and there are seven trips per day (including stop-overs).

Kagoshima Airport

Kagoshima Airport has an international and a domestic terminal. The international terminal is served by four flight routes, operating between Kagoshima and South Korea, Shanghai, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

The domestic airport is connected by daily direct flights to Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka and other large metropolitan cities, as well as the islands of Kagoshima including Yakushima Island, Tanegashima Island, Amami Oshima Island, Yoron Island, and so on.

Kamoike-Tarumizu Ferry

The Kamoike-Tarumizu Ferry is a regular 40-minute ferry operating between Kamoike Port on the Satsuma peninsula and Tarumizu Port on the Osumi peninsula.

The Sakurajima Ferry also connects Kagoshima City to the Osumi peninsula, but it is more convenient to get to Tarumizu City, Kanoya City, and Cape Sata, the southernmost tip of the Osumi peninsula via the Kamoike-Tarumizu Ferry.

The Nankai udon noodles, available on board the Tarumizu Ferry, also receives good reviews from even outside of Kagoshima Prefecture.

As udon is also available on board the Sakurajima Ferry, one might wish to take the Sakurajima Ferry on the way back, so as to try the udon and find the difference.

JR Kagoshima Chuo Station

JR Kagoshima Chuo Station is the busiest train station in Kagoshima Prefecture.

It is a transportation hub, served by a multitude of trains such as special express trains, sightseeing trains, and local trains.

The station has a prominent ferris wheel on top, and there are shopping arcades in the vicinity. Retail shops, restaurants and a cinema can be found here.

A highly accessible and convenient area, the terminal station for the Kagoshima City View bus is located here. The station is about a seven minute tram ride away from Tenmonkan, the downtown area of Kagoshima city.

Sakurajima Ferry

The Sakurajima Ferry is a regular ferry operating between Kagoshima Honko Port and Sakurajima Port.

Sakurajima Port is only approx. 4 km away from Kagoshima Port across the bay.

Sakurajima Ferry runs every 10-15 min during daytime, and operates 24 hours.

Visitors can enjoy the charm of Sakurajima and Kinko Bay from the ferry.



Locals also enjoy the cruise with udon noodles sold on the ferry.

This is one of the recommended ways to enjoy the ferry from downtown Kagoshima to Sakurajima.

1st Get on the ferry

2nd Rush to the Japanees noodle shop "Yabukin", and order udon noodles!

3rd Grab your udon noodle bowl and chopsticks (be careful not to spill the scalding hot soup), and eat outside while looking at the Sakurajima volcano coming closer to you.

4th When you hear the announcement signaling your imminent arrival at Sakurajima, return your bowl to the shop saying "gochiso-sama".

Don't forget you need to finish all these steps within 15 minutes!

Welcome Cute: A Convenient Transportation Pass in Kagoshima City

The Kagoshima City Transport Bureau "Welcome Cute Pass" allows unlimited travel for one single day. *2-day passes are also available.

The pass is valid on all Kagoshima City Transport Bureau city bus routes, tram lines, and ferry lines.

Before boarding a bus with the Welcome Cute Pass, please check that the bus is a City Bus* like these in the pictures provided below. *(The Welcome Cute Pass does not cover travel on private buses.)

The pass may be used for the sightseeing City View Buses which stop at main tourist spots in downtown Kagoshima.

The City View Bus is a great way to see Kagoshima City in an hour with English audio guide.

From Marine Port Kagoshima to Tenmonkan in central Kagoshima takes 25-30 min by Taxi and costs approximately 3,000 YEN.

The nearest stations are Wakita Tram Stop, and JR Usuki Staion. It takes 35 minutes on foot or 10 min by Taxi costing approximately ¥1,200.

From the city area it is very easy to access the active volcano Sakurajima, the Japanese gardens at Senganen, the aquarium, and outdoor hot springs from which you can enjoy the view of Sakurajima.

Within 15 minutes by taxi, there are cultural attractions, electronics stores, hot springs, and shopping malls where you can enjoy your stay in Kagoshima without going too far from the port.
