Kirishima Shrine is indeed the symbol of Kirishima. It was originally built on top of Mt.Takachiho in the middle of the 6th century to deify Niniginomikoto. The present Kirishima Shrine was rebuilt in 1715 by the 21st feudal lord of the Satsuma Clan，Yoshitaka Shimadzu after the original one was destroyed by fire caused by an eruption.

There are a number of hot springs along the flanks of the Kitishima mountains, as well as a range of accommodation facilities, from deluxe hotels to traditional Japanese inns and camping sites. This area is also known for the fact that Ryoma and Oryo Sakamoto came on their honeymoon，the first one of its kind in Japan.
