Every May, a long stretch of the Sendai River in Miyanojo comes to life with thousands of tiny lights fluttering along the banks. The phenomenon is caused by the firefly: only one of a handful of living creatures in the world that can produce light.

Thanks to the warm, humid climate and the body of freshwater, fireflies thrive in Miyanjo, making it an ideal place to see them in action. Take the 40-minute boat cruise at sunset to see the glowing lights up close. It will be easy to imagine how these beautiful beetles use their lights to attract and secure a mate while you watch them dance at the river’s edge.
