Nakasatsuma Area History and Culture

This is a historic shrine nestled in a residential area. A large statue of Otafuku-san, measuring 3 meters in length and width, welcomes visitors with a kind, smiling face.
Pass through his smiling mouth to reach the offering box.

Kamoike Hie Shrine was built around 1749 to pray for peace and tranquility in everyday life.
The sacred camphor tree on the grounds is believed to be about 250 years old and is designated a preserved tree by Kagoshima City.

Many visitors come to the shrine to pray for safe childbirth and safe travels. Good luck charms and ema (votive picture tablet) featuring Otafuku-san are popular among visitors.

The statue of Otafuku-san is on display from the end of the year until early March. Photographers are recommended to take pictures around noon to avoid shadows. The shrine wishes all visitors a year full of happiness.
