Amami Area History and Culture

Inokawa is home to a commemorative statue of Asashio Taro (1929–1988), a Tokunoshima-born sumo wrestler who was named yokozuna, the highest rank in sumo. He was well known for his tremendous pushing techniques. After retirement, he inherited Takasago Sumo Stable where he trained many sumo wrestlers.

Today, Tokunoshima is renowned for developing successful sumo wrestlers.
