Nanshu Shrine (南洲神社(和泊町))

Okinoerabujima Island

Amami Area History and Culture

Okinoerabu is well known for being the island where historical figure Saigo Takamori (also known as Saigo Nanshu) was sent in exile. A Kagoshima man, Saigo played a central role in bringing Japan's over-700-year-long samurai period to an end and modernizing Japan. This is where Saigo is enshrined. There is also a bronze statue of him and his beloved dog Tsun at the shrine. Saigo admirers will want to visit Saigo Nanshu Memorial Museum and Nanshu Shrine together.
