Kyakusai, in the south of Tokunoshima, acts as a farmers’ market and is the island’s largest direct-to-consumer retail shop. It stocks products from about 200 local farmers and producers including seasonal fruits and vegetables, foods and snacks made from kokuto, a brown sugar unique to Japan’s southern islands.
For a unique taste of Tokunoshima, try the shop’s gelato, which is freshly made on site using kokuto brown sugar and local seasonal fruits.
