Koriyama Hachiman Shrine is renowned as the site of the earliest known written reference to shochu, a distilled spirit much like vodka. Shochu made from sweet potatoes is a specialty of Kagoshima Prefecture and is beloved in Japan and abroad. As the site of the first historic reference to this unique drink, Isa holds a special place in hearts as the birthplace of sweet potato shochu.

Dating from 1559, the mention of shochu is in graffiti in the rafters of Koriyama Hachiman Shrine. It is believed to have been written by carpenters who were repairing the shrine and wanted to record their complaint that they were not given shochu at the end of their work. The wooden text is designated an important cultural property of Japan.

Set in lush, leafy surrounds, Koriyama Hachiman Shrine is quiet and peaceful. There are two approaches, each marked with tori gates from which lanterns in vermillion posts line the way to the main buildings. This beautiful shrine is where visitors wish for good business, smooth birth and road safety.
