Koshiki Museum
(甑ミュージアム)
On the Koshiki Islands, many dinosaur fossils have been found in the strata of the late Cretaceous period (about 80-70 million years ago). Among the horned dinosaurs (plant-eating dinosaurs), the ceratopsian dinosaurs with prominent horns were the first precious discovery in Japan. In recent years, dinosaur fossils have been found on Kamikoshiki Island in the strata of the period close to when the mass extinction of dinosaurs occurred.
The Koshiki Museum displays approximately 1,000 items, including fossils, rocks and other valuable specimens, found on Koshikishima, the islands off the coast of Satsumasendai.
Projection mapping with commentary recorded by local residents provides information about the formation of the land and the environment surrounding the island. Visitors can also observe fossil cleaning.
