Satsuma was the name of the former country and region located in present-day western Kagoshima Prefecture. Even today, "Satsuma" is widely used as an archaic term for Kagoshima. Satsuma speaks broadly and deeply to the prominent transitional period of history from the end of the shogunate to the Meiji Period (mid-to-late 18th century). "Satsuma" also refers to valuable ceramic works called "Satsuma-yaki", many of which are on display at Satsuma Denshokan. Artworks on display lend a stately air to this space, which is used to hold parties as well as regular concerts and other events. Also inside Satsuma Denshokan, which is located on the grounds of the Ibusuki Hakusuikan hotel, is the restaurant Fenice, which serves authentic Italian cuisine.
