A new way to travel
Osaka offers one of Japan’s most dynamic city experiences—bustling markets, world-class street food, historic sites and a plethora of fascinating museums. Meanwhile, in southern Kyushu, Kagoshima beckons with dramatic volcanic landscapes, serene hot springs, fertile countryside and a rich regional cuisine rooted in centuries of history.
The Sunflower ferry creates a perfect bridge between these worlds and invites travelers to experience the journey in comfort and style. This voyage invites exploration beyond Japan’s major cities and a deep dive into regional life and culture, while enjoying warm hospitality.
Why travel on the Sunflower?
Traveling on the Sunflower blends transportation and accommodation into one seamless experience. Overnight departure and next-morning arrival help travelers make the most of their days on land, freeing up daytime for sightseeing rather than transit.
Sunflower’s onboard experience
Onboard life offers a chance to relax and unwind away from daily routines, enjoy star-filled skies at sea, panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, or watch sunset and dawn from the deck. The ferry’s relaxed pace encourages reflection, connection and memorable moments: something often impossible on other travel modes.
Accommodation
All accommodation on the Sunflower ferry is non-smoking. There are many types, ranging from Suite, a luxurious 2–3-bed room with a private bathroom and balcony, to Tourist, a budget-friendly communal room with Japanese-style tatami mat flooring. There are also all kinds of rooms in between, each with different price points, including Deluxe Western style, Deluxe Japanese-style, Superior, Private Bed Single, Standard Single, Standard Double and Private Bed Group, which consists of capsule-hotel-style spaces in a shared room. Each type of room has a barrier-free option and there are dedicated Deluxe cabins for passengers who wish to share the journey with their dog.
Dining & entertainment
Onboard facilities transform the voyage into an experience. Guests can enjoy generous dinner and breakfast buffets featuring a wide array of dishes from Japanese, Western and other Asian cuisines before unwinding in a public bath with sweeping views of the coast and ocean.
The shop is stocked with daily necessities as well as drinks, snacks and items like motion sickness medication for guests prone to motion sickness. There is also a treasure trove of distinctive Kagoshima-made products, which make it ideal for both shopping and browsing. The signature items include food and drink made using regional produce, crafts by local artisans, and exclusive souvenirs found only in the prefecture and rarely in typical outlets, providing travelers with a unique opportunity to get to know Kagoshima even before docking. Please check the shop’s opening hours when you board.
The public areas host projection-mapping shows and live musical performances, while nearby game machines, massage chairs and a kids’ room add to the entertainment options. Expansive deck spaces, meanwhile, invite visitors to enjoy a stroll, fresh air and views of the coastline and ocean, both of which are particularly impressive at dusk and dawn.
Reservations, payment & fares
Reservations can be made online or by phone, including by credit card, typically three months before departure. Passengers can choose from competitive fares depending on accommodation type, seasonal pricing variations and available discounts, with a one-way fare for an adult starting from ¥17,590. Web reservation discounts and return trip deals are often available.
Timetable & travel time
From Monday through Saturday, the Sunflower departs Osaka at 17:55 and arrives at Shibushi Port at 8:55 the next morning. On Sunday, the ferry departs 55 minutes earlier, at 17:00, but arrives at its usual time.
Accessibility, boarding & other services
The Sunflower provides barrier-free access throughout public spaces, as well as dedicated barrier-free toilets and shower facilities. Passengers are encouraged to check in well before departure (typically 60–90 minutes in advance). Vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and pets can also be boarded; the ship features bicycle racks and pet-friendly facilities including cabins for passengers and their dogs, a dedicated pet room and an outdoor dog run.
Other onboard facilities are also designed for comfort and convenience. There is free Wi-Fi, multilingual digital information boards displaying weather updates and onboard operating hours, private shower rooms, laundry facilities and lockers for personal belongings or valuables. Families will appreciate the kids’ room and baby-changing rooms, and there are vending machines, microwaves and hot-water stations so passengers can enjoy snacks and light meals anytime.
Accessing the ferry terminal in Osaka
The Sunflower departs from Sunflower (Osaka) Terminal 2, located in Osaka’s South Port (Nanko) area, which is about one hour by train from Kansai International Airport and 35 minutes by train from central Osaka’s Namba Station.
The closest station to the port is Trade Center-mae Station on the Osaka New Tram Line, from where it’s around a five-minute walk to the terminal building. Travelers can use the free shuttle bus service linking Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 to assist with boarding and luggage.
By car, the terminal is easily accessed via the Hanshin Expressway Wangan Line (Bayshore Route). It’s a 15-minute drive from central Osaka or a 20-minute drive from Kansai International Airport.
Access from Shibushi Port, Kagoshima
The Sunflower docks at Shibushi Port, on the eastern coast of Osumi Peninsula, a gateway to exploring Kagoshima Prefecture and beyond.
A dedicated shuttle, the Sunflower Liner, runs between Shibushi Port and Kagoshima-Chuo Station, the terminus of the Kyushu Shinkansen and a popular place for shopping, dining and gathering tourist information. The bus service is free (prior reservation required), making onward travel smooth and stress-free for visitors heading to the heart of Kagoshima.
For those who prefer the freedom of independent navigation, rental car services are available at Shibushi Port. From there, Shibushi and the rest of the Osumi peninsula boast offerings as diverse as coastal scenic routes, hidden temples, outdoor hot springs and traditional festivals. Alternatively, visitors can travel further by making use of the one-way drop-off plan that allows the rental car to be returned at another location such as Kagoshima Airport.
Sightseeing in Kagoshima Prefecture
Kagoshima Prefecture boasts a wealth of attractions including rare landscapes such as the active volcano Sakurajima, rejuvenating hot springs, historic samurai districts, lush national parks, farm-to-table local cuisine and nearby islands perfect for day trips. Travelers arriving via the Sunflower can delve into these regional charms with ease. Here are details of 12 sightseeing spots, primarily on the Osumi Peninsula near Shibushi Port.
