Aizomeya (Indigo Dyeing Experience) (藍染屋)

Japan Blue, the 100% natural indigo dye made from a 600-year-old traditional technique

Nansatsu Area Culture

The process of natural lye fermentation has been passed down here for 600 years, making it a highly skilled dying technique that is unparalleled globally and a treasure in Japan.
Fermentation takes about 10 days in the pots, after which it is possible to begin dyeing. The indigo is completely natural and no chemical dyes are used.
Using all five senses, we check the state of fermentation over several days, occasionally mixing in shochu (distilled alcohol). The solution created has a unique hue, making it possible to have an environmentally friendly, recyclable indigo dyeing process. The indigo color made from this natural process is praised overseas as "Japan Blue."
Our workshop, situated in our reformed stables and surrounded by nature, has a relaxing and timeless atmosphere. Why not come and join us to experience the joy of creativity using real indigo.
